Anecdotes on Pain Relief, Muscle Tone Restoration, and improved Sports Performance
Today I’d like to share an anecdote I thought you might be interested in.
Some of the stories I will cover over the coming weeks might be reminiscent
of your own situation. The names of clients have been changed to protect
their privacy.
"Pain killers could not relieve her headaches"
I was busy moving into my new studio and I got a call from Denise, with
whom I hadn’t spoken before. She said that she had a chronic headache
for the last 2 weeks, and all the pain killers could no longer give her any
relief. Alice, one of my current clients had recommended me to her and
hence the call.
I learned that Denise had been experiencing higher stress than usual
and on palpation found that the muscles on her neck, shoulders and
upper back were quite tight (hyper tonic) . The combined tightness in
all these areas can put an enormous amount of stress on the base of the
skull and the upper spine (cervical vertebrae), since the upper ends of
some muscles are attached here (origin).
Strange as it may seem, points of pain in these muscles (trigger points)
actually cause pain in different parts of the head that appear totally
unrelated. In Denise’s case her pain was just behind the eye and the affected point
that was causing the pain was at the base of the skull just behind the ear.
Treatment of the trigger points
on the muscles causing the headache lowered the tone and to some degree
restored their length, and in so doing the tension was reduced which in
turn relieved the headache. It is important that all the effected tissue
in the area be treated since they work as a group and share the tension.
After the first treatment on the neck and shoulders the headache had
subsided significantly. And after the second treatment it was relieved
completely. We are continuing work on restoring the resting tone of the
muscle groups to avoid a recurrence
of the headaches.
Next week I will share a story on ‘tight neck and shoulders’ which we
all have experienced at some time or other. I will try to cover a new story
each week. All these stories will be archived on my website. As always
your comments are most welcome.
